Did you know that 99.99% of all Advertisers / Printers / Marketing and Advertising agencies that work for you are in a direct conflict of interest? It’s the industry’s dirty little secret that know one likes to talk about, but it’s there and can cost you dearly if you don’t know about it and protect yourself from it.

Your Secrets are Not Safe
There is NO way to protect your confidential information when a business is working with your competitors.  Everyone knows what you are up to, when your ads go out and why. Sales reps talk to each other all the time and scout for information they can use to their advantage. Having a big sale soon, within a day or so your competitors will indirectly know about it.

Sales Secrets You need to Know
Ever notice that advertising runs in bunches? If there is a sale on auto repair just about everyone is advertising the same thing at the same time.

There is a little sales secret that you need to be aware of, if you book an ad with XYZ ad company chances are that your ad rep is also working with your competitors. Or other sales reps in the same organization are scouting for information they can use to increase their own sales.

The technique goes something like this... I (the sales person) is always on the lookout for information about an ad order or big marketing event. It is very easy to do, but here are a few examples:

  • Most obviously, you book the spots direct with me.
  • You book the spots with another rep in the organization and it would become common knowledge.
  • I scout out the creative department.
  • In the weekly or daily sales meetings.

Armed with this information I then go to my other accounts (your competitors) and let it slip out what the “other guys” are up too.

This does 2 things: One, gains trust of this person, and Two, allows us to work together and figure out away to capitalize on this information, 9 times out of 10, ending up with me having doubled or my sales.

This is only one of a 100 other techniques and variations. Rest assured your information is being shared over lunch or on the golf course with your competitors.

Don’t be surprised by this information. You need to understand ad Reps DO NOT WORK FOR YOU! They are there to feed their families, make the boss happy and to advance their own careers. They do this by selling ads, they don’t really care if your business is successful or not, they have no vested interest, they see business start and close everyday. In fact, sometimes the reps make most of their quick coin on Grande Opening and Going Out of Business advertising campaigns.

Most Ad reps I know are great friendly helpful people. But at the end of the day they are there to sell you a product, ads, signs, website, whatever. Does this make them bad people? NO, not at all, they are there to do a service and that is to facilitate a transaction...period! Some are friendly and more helpful than others, but remember they answer to the boss, and if they don’t make sales they are gone...those are the facts.

By understanding this you can always have the upper hand and do what’s in the best interest of your business.
